The rubber-rice pact has fully demonstrated our national spirit in the struggle against hegemony and power politics, Foreign Minister Yi said, adding that since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1957, the two sides have been together. always respected and supported. In 2014, President Xi Jinping paid a historic state visit to Sri Lanka, opening a new chapter in friendly cooperation between China and Sri Lanka.

Stressing that China and Sri Lanka are good friends and help each other, the State Councilor pointed out that after the outbreak of the pandemic, President Gotabaya donated Ceylon black tea to China twice. on behalf of the Sri Lankan government and people, and the Prime Minister. Mahinda personally led members of his cabinet to sing prayers for China, while China provided a large number of COVID-19 vaccines and anti-pandemic supplies to Sri Lanka.

China and Sri Lanka are good partners for common development, he said, noting that Sri Lanka is also an important part of China’s Belt and Road cooperation in South Asia. Further speaking, the Chinese Foreign Minister said that the first phase of the port city of Colombo has been successfully completed and new projects are ready to be launched. Achievements have been made time and time again in the cooperative operation of Colombo Port, bringing significant benefits to Sri Lanka.

He added that the Port of Hambantota’s freight throughput has reached record levels and the industrial park is growing at full speed.

In addition, the State Councilor said that China and Sri Lanka are good brothers who support each other, as the Sri Lankan side always respects the one-China principle and supports China’s legitimate position in international and regional affairs while China firmly supports Sri Lanka in safeguarding sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity and following a development path suited to its national conditions.

“The strategic cooperation partnership between the two countries, characterized by sincere mutual assistance and lasting friendship, has continued to develop in depth,” he said.

Wang Yi stressed that at a time when the global pandemic is spreading and the economic recovery is tortuous and difficult, the two countries must work together more closely than ever.

The two sides should use the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries and the 70th anniversary of the signing of the rubber-rice pact as an opportunity to advance the spirit of the pact, which is characterized by independence. , self-confidence, unity and mutual support, jointly face challenges, share opportunities, seek common development and consolidate and expand the China-Sri Lanka strategic cooperation partnership, in order to better serve the interests of two countries and two peoples.

The Chinese Foreign Minister also said that the two countries should further deepen mutual political trust, firmly support their core interests, major concerns and national dignity, and should unite more to fight the pandemic.

China will continue to provide anti-pandemic supplies according to Sri Lanka’s needs and will cooperate with Sri Lanka on specific vaccines and drugs. We must seek more synergies between our development strategies. China will strongly encourage high-quality Belt and Road cooperation and help Sri Lanka realize its “Vision of Prosperity and Glory”.
