Martin to Lead Indiana Pork Youth Engagement

Indiana Pork has hired Chad Martin as director of youth engagement. His professional experiences have involved rural and agricultural economic development in Indiana and Illinois.

Most recently, Martin served as Project Director for the Wabash Heartland Innovation Network at the Ivy Tech campus in Lafayette, where he oversaw a $1 million grant fund from the Lilly Endowment Initiative to accelerate the adoption of agriculture. digital and advanced manufacturing technologies. He was previously a state extension specialist in the Agricultural and Biological Engineering Department at Purdue, spent time at the Indiana State Department of Agriculture with the Indiana Cooperative Development Center and was at the Illinois Institute of Rural Affairs.

“I am thrilled to take on this role and begin serving with the team gathered at Indiana Pork to support the youth of our state. The timing is perfect. Indiana’s junior breeding programs are experiencing exceptional growth from participation and momentum continues because families see value in raising their children within this ecosystem of life skills development,” says Martin. “My hope is to help facilitate and leverage the strength of the Certified Indiana Bred program, and to find even more ways to take advantage of the engagement opportunities that allow young people to explore their place in a career in the hog industry.”

“With Chad’s experience at cattle shows and as one of the founders of Indiana’s Certified Indiana Bred program, he will definitely have that part of the job covered,” said Josh Trenary, executive director of ‘Indiana Pork. “But more importantly, he brings teaching and outreach experience that can help us with your overall development efforts. Indiana Pork can also utilize Chad’s sustainable energy experience on the training side of producers, making him a versatile addition to our team.”

Martin was raised on a designated “Hoosier Homestead” farm near Walton, Indiana, now in his sixth generation after being a hybrid seed corn production company and a diversified livestock feed operation. He graduated from Purdue University with a master’s degree in agricultural and extension education and a minor in animal science, a bachelor’s degree from Western Illinois University and an associate’s degree in applied science from Joliet Junior College.

He recently served as Vice President of the American Yorkshire Club with the National Swine Registry and is currently President of the Indiana Yorkshire Club.
