IN THE GITSTART MODEL

Before software engineer Hamza Zia got the job that would serve as his ticket out of Pakistan, he had spent 6 years applying for numerous software engineering jobs and getting rejected. It seemed like no company was willing to hire him, until Microsoft did in 2012, and he moved to Shanghai, China to work from their office there.

As Zia progressed in his career and began to take on the responsibility of hiring engineers himself, he came to understand why he had been rejected all these years. Now, while time zone differences and fluency in the language – Zia’s English wasn’t always excellent – had been major hurdles in her job as a developer, her biggest hurdle, at the time, was that, despite years of programming experience, he was considered a junior developer by the companies he applied to because he hadn’t yet built any active products – with the exception of the e-commerce platform that he had dropped out in high school in 2006 to build and operate for 2 years before closing due to lack of funding.

Thus, 7 years after her first international work opportunity, Zia launched her own company, GitStart, in 2019 to respond to the paradox of companies that bypass engineers with junior experience without offering them the opportunity to broaden their skills. . He decided to create a platform where junior software engineers could help top companies build products.

As a PRAAS (pull-requests-as-a-service) platform, GitStart helps Silicon Valley startups grow faster by sharing parts of their work with a host of developers. This solves 2 problems: it allows startups to scale faster and helps junior engineers gain the skills and experience they or they need scaling.

THE GRUPP PUSH FOR FINANCIAL INCLUSION IN RURAL AREAS

In many Nigerian cities, commercial banks and banking agents are ubiquitous and the provision of financial services is robust. But as you move away from these urban centers into rural areas, they start to thin out or disappear altogether.

Since its inception in Nigeria in 2013, agency banking has become an important part of how commercial banks serve retail customers, especially since commercial banks themselves are rare in rural communities. And in many rural communities, savings and credit cooperatives (SACCOs) and small microfinance banks (MFBs) fill the financial gaps caused by the absence of commercial banks. However, the manual methods that these local institutions use to deliver financial services (careful recording of transactions with ink and paper, poor IT infrastructure) and their inability to expand to effectively serve rural areas limit the ability of these organizations to serve their communities.

Today, Grupp, a community banking-as-a-service startup, wants to help these microfinance banks, credit unions, and cooperatives digitize their processes and provide software that enables MFBs to leverage their intimate knowledge of their communities. to own, not just operate, agent banks. Led by Olamide Akinbande, former head of growth at Nomba (formerly Kudi), a Lagos-based fintech he helped build its agency banking unit, Grupp provides white-label software and hardware that helps small microfinance banks in rural and semi-urban areas. communities are offering digital financial services and automating previously manual processes.

Essentially, Grupp provides end-to-end white-label (POS) hardware and software infrastructure for financial institutions in rural areas. White label means that Grupp simply provides custom, unbranded software and hardware that other companies rely on to build a network of banking agents.

TC INSIGHTS: RESPONDING TO HOUSING PROBLEMS IN AFRICA

There is growing concern about the lack of affordable housing in Africa. For example, Kenya has a housing deficit of about 2 million houses, while more than 12 million Egyptians live in informal buildings. The situation is worse in Nigeria with a deficit of 16 million homes and more than 69% of the country’s urban population living in slums.

With Africa’s rapid population growth and increasing rate of urbanization, the need for affordable housing for Africans has never been more critical.

Currently, the supply and demand sides of the housing market are mostly at odds. To unleash these vast potentials, proptech companies are leveraging the network effect of technology to solve this problem from both the demand and supply side. On the supply side, tech companies have been able to simplify the process of connecting people to properties. With just a few clicks, selected tenants can easily book and pay for apartments using the flexible payment options available to them.

While technology has taken over the demand side, the supply side remains a difficult problem to solve. According to Naomi Olaghere, co-founder of Rent Small Small, a Lagos-based proptech company, “It will be next to impossible to close the deficit gap and meet the government target using our current construction method. Rapid construction technology, encouraged by the government and capable of providing mass housing such as prefabricated building systems, will help to achieve rapid gains. »

Beyond the use of rapid construction technology to improve supply, certain regulations must be adopted or modified. These regulations include enforcing monthly rent payments and facilitating a more viable mortgage system that gives people the ability to own a home after years of rent.

Although the technology is still expanding and not without flaws, it has been able to address and resolve many human errors and inefficiencies in the housing market. This will by no means solve housing issues in their entirety, but it will go a long way to redefining traditional processes, from property management, landlord and tenants to construction issues.
