Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah is due to address a national conclave which will deliberate on the future role of the urban cooperative credit sector in the country.
The conclave will discuss various issues related to scheduled and multi-state city cooperative banks and credit societies and also congratulate city cooperative banks that have completed 100 years of service to society, according to an official statement.
Minister of State for Cooperation BL Verma, Chairman Emeritus of the National Federation of Cooperative Banks and Urban Credit Societies (NAFCUB) HK Patil and senior ministry officials will attend the event.
Among other issues, the Conclave will discuss the recommendations of the Reserve Bank of India’s Committee of Experts, the Banking Regulation (Amendment) Act 2020, its impact and development, the role of credit in the financial sector scenario with particular reference to multi- State corporations and the issue of regulation and taxation of cooperative credit societies.
The Conclave will also commend urban cooperative banks that have completed 100 years of service to society. There are 197 such banks in the country. Urban cooperative banks are among the oldest banking institutions in the country. They have been around for over a century. These are banks organized and operated by a cross section of society which might include teachers, lawyers, merchants, doctors, engineers, social workers and others to provide banking services to their members.
